Financial barriers standing between thousands of Ebonyi students and their university dreams have been removed, at least for now, following a massive education intervention by the South East Renewed Hope Agenda in Abakaliki on Tuesday.

The group sponsored Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board registration fees for 10,000 students drawn from across the state's 13 local government areas and 171 wards, handing each beneficiary ₦8,500 to cover their costs.

The event attracted a wide gathering of stakeholders, education advocates, community leaders, parents, and students who witnessed what observers are already calling one of the largest single education support programmes Ebonyi State has seen in recent times.

James Eze Alaka, the State Coordinator of SERHA, described the programme as consistent with the group's dedication to youth empowerment and human capital development. He stressed that the initiative is designed to ensure that no qualified student is denied the opportunity to pursue higher education because of financial constraints, describing the gesture as "an investment in the future of the South East and Nigeria at large."

Alaka traced the group's history of empowerment activities, referencing a zonal programme in Owerri in December 2024 and subsequent distributions of vehicles, motorcycles, grinding machines, hair dryers, food items, and other materials across Ebonyi State in 2025. He also praised Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for complementing federal efforts through education focused policies, including sponsoring over 1,000 postgraduate students at home and abroad.

The National Coordinator of SERHA, Belusochukwu Enwere, delivered perhaps the most memorable words of the day, reframing the significance of the occasion beyond examination registration.

"Today is not just about registration for an examination. It is about unlocking doors of opportunity. It is about investing in the future and empowering a generation that will shape the destiny of our state and nation," Enwere declared.

Enwere commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration for stabilising the education sector and introducing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to expand access to tertiary education. Turning to the students, he urged them to honour the investment made in them.

"To our dear students, this is your stepping stone to greater heights. Prepare with focus and discipline. The future belongs to those who prepare for it today," he advised.

Parents and guardians were similarly encouraged to sustain support for their children's academic pursuits.

Stakeholders present applauded the initiative as timely relief for families struggling with examination costs, noting it reflects SERHA's broader mission of inclusive development across the South East.
