The NECO SSCE Timetable 2026 for internal candidates has been officially published by the National Examinations Council (NECO), covering all essential details including examination dates, subject schedules, and important updates for candidates across the country.

The timetable was released via NECO's official communication channels, with the examination body urging students, parents, and schools to refer only to the schedule on its official website, neco.gov.ng, and to disregard any other versions in circulation.

This announcement is especially important as thousands of final year secondary school students across Nigeria prepare for this crucial academic milestone. According to the released schedule, the 2026 NECO examination will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, and end on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The timetable covers all subjects across science, commerce, arts, and technical fields.

With unofficial schedules confusing in prior years, NECO has made it clear that the version on its website remains the sole authoritative timetable. Candidates can download the official timetable as a PDF to plan their study schedules effectively.

The NECO SSCE Internal Examination is the examination organised for secondary school students in their final year of Senior Secondary School (SS3). The National Examinations Council conducts it and is one of the major examinations required for admission to universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria.

The examination covers Science, Arts, Commerce, and Vocational subjects. Candidates who pass at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, can use the result for admission into higher institutions.

Major Updates for NECO SSCE 2026

NECO has introduced several important changes for the 2026 examination to improve security, reduce malpractice, and modernise the examination process. Candidates are expected to understand these new updates before registration and examination begin.

1. Introduction of Computer Based Testing (CBT)

NECO is set to gradually replace the traditional paper examination format with Computer Based Testing (CBT) starting from the 2026 May/June SSCE. This move is aimed at reducing examination malpractice, improving security, and making result processing faster and more efficient.

During the early stage of implementation, NECO will adopt a hybrid system where objective questions will be answered electronically, while some essay and theory papers may still be written using printed answer booklets until the full transition is completed.

2. NIN and Biometric Verification

All candidates registering for the 2026 NECO examination must possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN). In addition, each student will be assigned a unique National Learners Identification Number (NLIN) for examination purposes.

Candidates are also required to complete biometric registration using all ten fingers because biometric details are personal and cannot be duplicated. NECO has stated clearly that multiple or duplicate registrations will not be accepted.

Examination Structure

Most NECO subjects are divided into multiple papers:

Paper 1: Objective

Multiple choice questions are designed to test quick understanding and recall.

Paper 2: Essay

Registration for the NECO 2026 SSCE Internal examination opened on Monday, November 11, 2025. Normal registration closes on Monday, May 25, 2026. Late registration runs from May 26 to May 29, 2026.

The National Examinations Council has confirmed that there will be no extension for registration of candidates for the 2026 SSCE. The final date for normal registration is May 25, 2026, while the late registration deadline is May 29, 2026, with no further extension.

  • Must be a currently enrolled SS3 student in a recognised secondary school.

Important Instructions for NECO Candidates

1. CBT Examination Format

As part of NECO’s new examination system for the 2026 SSCE, candidates will answer objective questions using computers. However, some essay and theory sections may still be written with traditional answer booklets during the transition period to the full CBT system.

2. Practical Examination Arrangements

Where laboratory equipment or materials are limited, practical examinations may be organised in different batches. NECO has also directed that all practical sessions must be completed before 5:00 pm each day.

3. Support for Candidates with Special Needs

Candidates with visual impairments and albino candidates will receive an additional 30 minutes for each paper. Visually impaired students are expected to use only Braille sheets approved by NECO during the examination.

4. Restricted Materials

Simple calculators may be allowed in subjects where calculations are required, but electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, smart watches, tablets, and internet enabled devices are completely banned inside examination halls.

5. Candidate Identification

Every student must come to the examination venue with a valid NECO photocard containing their registration details and photograph for proper identification before entering the hall.

6. Early Arrival at Examination Centres

Candidates are advised to get to their examination centres on time and carefully follow all instructions given by supervisors and invigilators throughout the examination period.

7. Examination Malpractice Warning
