Prof. Emmanuel Ibezim, the Vice Chancellor of the European University of Nigeria (EUN), Abuja, has unveiled a strategic plan to revitalise tertiary education in the country. Addressing journalists ahead of the institution's maiden matriculation ceremony scheduled for March 7, the Vice Chancellor emphasised that the University was founded to provide a solution to the frequent industrial actions and infrastructure deficits plaguing the sector. He noted that the theme of the event, “Addressing the Gaps in Nigerian University Education: A Practical Reform Agenda”, reflects the core mission of the institution.

To ensure that a broader demographic of students can access this quality education, the university has set its admission benchmark at a minimum of 150 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. Ibezim explained that this decision balances accessibility with academic excellence. The institution currently runs 23 fully approved programmes, ranging from Pharmacy and Law to Cybersecurity and Software Engineering.

A key aspect of the EUN model is the integration of a European curriculum with local content. The Vice Chancellor revealed that the university brings in visiting lecturers from partner institutions abroad to enrich the learning experience. "We are delivering European standard education within Nigeria at affordable rates. This is our contribution to reversing educational migration and conserving foreign exchange for national development," he remarked.

Regarding infrastructure, the don pointed out that the university boasts modern laboratories, digital classrooms, campus wide WiFi, and a constant power supply. He stressed that the institution provides a secure environment conducive to learning, with a strict zero tolerance policy against drug and substance abuse.

Speaking on the financial operations of private universities, Ibezim observed that these institutions operate without TETFund support and are currently excluded from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund. However, he maintained that EUN remains affordable and offers various scholarships. Looking to the future, the Vice Chancellor expressed a strong ambition for the school. "Our vision is that within five years, EUN will rank among Nigeria’s leading institutions in Cybersecurity, Nursing, Pharmacy, Software Engineering and Law, while producing globally competitive, skill driven graduates," he concluded.
