Every loaf of bread, bowl of rice, and piece of fruit begins with plants, making Plant Science one of the foundations of agriculture and food security. The JAMB cut off mark for Plant Science for the 2026/2027 academic session spans from 150 to 220, depending on the university and the competitiveness of the course.

Plant Science focuses on crop production, plant genetics, soil management, plant diseases, biotechnology, and the scientific methods used to improve agricultural yield and sustainability. Students gain practical and laboratory based training in plant breeding, pest control, environmental management, and modern farming systems.

Graduates work in agriculture, research institutes, biotechnology companies, food production firms, environmental agencies, and government ministries as agronomists, plant researchers, crop consultants, and agricultural officers.

Below are the universities offering Plant Science in Nigeria alongside their expected JAMB cut off marks, admission requirements, subject combinations, and career opportunities for the 2026/2027 academic session.

Requirements That Get Students Rejected

Your JAMB score is important, but it will not save you if you ignore the rules below.

O Level Requirements

You need at least five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and any other science subject like Physics or Agricultural Science. These credits must come from no more than two exam sittings. WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB results are accepted.

UTME Subject Combination

You must register for English Language, Biology, Chemistry, and any other science subject, like Physics or Mathematics. Do not register for arts subjects like Government or Literature. That combination will get your application rejected.

Where Can Plant Science Take You?

Plant Science opens doors to careers in agriculture, biotechnology, environmental science, and pharmaceuticals.

1. Plant Breeder

Plant breeders develop new crop varieties that resist diseases, tolerate drought, or produce higher yields. They work for agricultural research institutes and seed companies.

2. Botanist

Botanists study plants in their natural habitats, identifying new species, documenting plant life, and advising on conservation efforts. Their work happens in forests, wetlands, and botanical gardens.

3. Agricultural Consultant

Agricultural consultants help farmers and agribusinesses make better decisions about crop selection, disease management, and soil health. They show farmers how to grow more food with fewer resources.

4. Plant Pathologist

Plant pathologists figure out why plants get sick and how to stop the spread. Their work takes place in research institutes, agricultural agencies, and pharmaceutical companies.

5. Horticulturist

Horticulturists grow fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants. They work in nurseries, botanical gardens, and landscaping companies, putting beauty and food side by side.

6. Biotechnologist

Biotechnologists use genetic engineering to improve plants, developing crops that produce their own pesticides, resist viruses, or thrive in poor soil.

7. Environmental Consultant

Environmental consultants assess how construction projects damage plant life and help companies follow environmental laws before breaking ground.

8. Seed Technologist

Seed technologists test seeds for quality, purity, and germination rates, making sure farmers plant only the best. They work for seed companies and agricultural agencies.

9. Pharmacognosist

Pharmacognosists study traditional medicinal plants and help pharmaceutical companies turn ancient remedies into modern drugs.

10. Academic

Academics teach Plant Science at universities and polytechnics, training the next generation of plant scientists.
