The official WAEC Financial Accounting syllabus for the 2026/2027 academic session serves as the definitive reference for candidates preparing to take the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Financial Accounting.
It is relevant to both school based and private (GCE) candidates across all WAEC member nations, including Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia.
As an important commercial subject, Financial Accounting provides candidates with essential practical competencies in documenting, examining, and interpreting financial data. These skills form the bedrock for careers in accounting, banking, finance, and business administration.
Aims and Objectives
- Understanding of accounting principles and the role of accounting in recording business transactions.
- Appreciation and application of the rules and functions of Accounting as they apply to an organisation.
- Foundation for further studies in Accounting.
Examination Scheme
There will be two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, which will be combined into a single composite paper to be taken in one sitting.
PAPER 1: Will comprise fifty multiple choice questions to be taken in 1 hour for 50 marks.
PAPER 2: will be made up of two sections: Sections A and B, and will last 2½ hours.
Section A: will contain five essay questions on the theory of financial accounting. Candidates will be required to answer two out of the four questions for 15 marks each.
Section B: will contain five essay questions on financial accounting practice. Candidates will be required to answer three out of the questions for 15 marks each.
