What do antibiotics, beer, and vaccine research have in common? Microbiology. The JAMB cut off mark for Microbiology for the 2026/2027 academic session runs from 150 to 230. Federal universities expect higher scores. State schools accept moderate ranges. Private institutions take lower marks.

Students study bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. They learn how these organisms affect human health, food, agriculture, and industry. Graduates can work as microbiologists, lab analysts, and quality control officers in hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, food factories, and research labs. Below are all Nigerian universities offering Microbiology with their cut off marks, requirements, and career opportunities.

Federal Universities Offering Microbiology

Most federal universities offer Microbiology under the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Below are the federal institutions that do, along with their cut off marks for 2026.

Requirements That Get Students Rejected

Your JAMB score is important, but it will not save you if you ignore the rules below.

O Level Requirements

You need at least five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Microbiology is a science course that requires all three core sciences. These credits must come from no more than two exam sittings. WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB results are accepted.

UTME Subject Combination

You must register for English Language, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Do not register for Mathematics in place of Biology or Physics. That combination will get your application rejected.

Careers in Microbiology

Microbiology opens doors to careers in healthcare, food production, pharmaceuticals, and environmental science.

1. Clinical Microbiologist

Identifying the bacteria, viruses, or fungi causing a patient's illness. Clinical microbiologists work in hospitals and diagnostic laboratories.

2. Pharmaceutical Microbiologist

Testing drugs and vaccines for contamination. Pharmaceutical companies need microbiologists to ensure their products are safe for human use.

3. Food Microbiologist

Making sure food products are free from harmful bacteria. Food processing plants hire microbiologists to test ingredients, monitor production, and investigate outbreaks.

4. Industrial Microbiologist

Using microbes to produce things. Beer, yoghurt, cheese, antibiotics, and biofuels. Industrial microbiologists work in breweries, dairy plants, and biotech firms.

5. Environmental Microbiologist

Studying microbes in soil, water, and air. Environmental microbiologists track pollution, clean up oil spills, and monitor water quality for communities.

6. Public Health Microbiologist

Tracking disease outbreaks and identifying threats. Public health microbiologists work for government agencies monitoring the spread of infectious diseases.

7. Research Scientist

Conducting experiments to understand how microbes behave. Research scientists work in universities, research institutes, and pharmaceutical companies.

8. Quality Control Officer

Ensuring laboratories and production facilities follow safety standards. Quality control officers test equipment, monitor procedures, and document results.

9. Academic

Teaching Microbiology at a university or polytechnic. Academics train the next generation of microbiologists and conduct research.

10. Biotech Entrepreneur

Starting a business focused on microbial testing, fermentation, or bioremediation. The biotechnology industry is growing, and new companies are emerging.
