The Federal Capital Territory Administration has condemned the Nigeria Union of Teachers, FCT Wing, after reports emerged that union members forced students and teachers out of classrooms on Monday, one day before the scheduled commencement of the 2026 West African Examinations Council Senior School Certificate Examination.

Mandate Secretary of the FCT Education Secretariat, Danlami Hayyo, raised the alarm during an inspection visit to schools across the territory on Monday, where he appealed to teachers to suspend the industrial action immediately.

Hayyo warned that the timing of the strike was particularly damaging, with candidates scheduled to begin WAEC examinations the following day.

"How can you expect your sons and daughters to write their exams tomorrow when you are chasing them out of school today? You are demoralising them; psychologically, this could lead to mass failure. WAEC will not reschedule its calendar specifically for FCT students. Do you want them to miss this opportunity entirely?" he stated.

The NUT had on Friday directed primary and secondary school teachers across the FCT to commence an indefinite strike from Monday, citing the alleged failure of the FCTA to resolve longstanding welfare concerns and deteriorating economic conditions affecting its members.

Hayyo also expressed displeasure at reports that some union members forcibly shut down classrooms, describing the action as counterproductive and harmful to students who had spent months preparing for the examinations.

The 2026 WAEC May/June Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates in Nigeria is scheduled to run from Tuesday, April 21 to Friday, June 19, 2026.
