The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has called on governments at all levels, private organisations and other stakeholders to increase investment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training, describing it as a critical pathway to technological advancement, wealth creation and economic self reliance.
The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, made the call during an examination monitoring visit to Benin Technical College, Benin City, and Christlike School at the Internally Displaced Persons Camp, Uhogua, in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State on Tuesday.
The visits formed part of the ongoing monitoring exercise for the 2026 NABTEB May/June In School National Business Certificate and National Technical Certificate examinations.
At Benin Technical College, Mohammed commended the Edo State Government for its substantial investment in the institution, describing it as a facility endowed with modern equipment and students demonstrating exceptional technical creativity. He noted, however, that more could still be done to position the college among the leading technical institutions in the country.
He urged students to embrace technical and vocational education as a practical solution to unemployment, poverty and underdevelopment, and encouraged the institution to adopt the National Skills Qualification Framework, of which NABTEB serves as a General Awarding Body. He noted that the programme offered learners pathways to career progression and international recognition.
At Christlike School in the IDP Camp, Uhogua, the registrar encouraged candidates to remain focused and take advantage of opportunities offered by technical education. He assured them that NABTEB certificates carried significant value and could open doors to self employment and entrepreneurship.
"Artisans, craftsmen and technicians are highly sought after and command attractive earnings, particularly in developed economies," Mohammed stated, reiterating NABTEB's commitment to promoting quality technical education and equipping candidates with skills relevant to national development and global competitiveness.
The monitoring exercise, he noted, also provided an opportunity to assess facilities firsthand and engage school administrators on areas of collaboration aimed at strengthening technical education across Nigeria.
